Simple steps to improve eyesight

When we don’t see well, we cling to where we can. While it is impossible to correct vision problems without lenses or surgery, there are still some simple steps you can take yourself to improve your vision and eye health.

Natural ways to improve eyesight

The best way to naturally improve vision is to provide your eyes with what they need to stay healthy. Regular consumption of nutritious foods and vitamins will help keep your eyes and body in general fit.

Vitamins and antioxidants

There are two most common vitamins and antioxidants that can improve vision:

  • Vitamin A (a vitamin A deficiency can affect our supply of rhodopsin, a key pigment that allows us to see in low light and at night)
  • Lutein

The effects of lutein on the eyes

Lutein is a pigment found in high concentrations in a layer of the retina where pigment-laden cells protect the eye from strong light. A lutein supplement facilitates this defense process by naturally improving vision.

Fortunately, lutein is an antioxidant found naturally in fruits and vegetables, such as spinach, kale and Swiss chard.

Foods that are good for the eyes

Many vitamins and antioxidants that naturally improve vision are present in common foods such as:

  • Carrots, kale, spinach and kale (vitamin A and lutein)
  • Liver (vitamin A), including cod liver oil
  • Swiss chard, courgettes and Brussels sprouts (lutein)
  • Sweet potatoes and butter (vitamin A)

Can eye exercises help eyesight?

Many eye exercises are presented as natural methods for improving vision and overcoming myopia problems. The Bates Method suggests eye rest, movement and visualization techniques to reshape the eyeball and improve vision. Yan Bao Jian Cao suggests massage and acupressure as solutions to reduce fatigue and eye problems.

However, these exercises have not been shown to produce concrete results: the testimonies circulating are either not documented or refer to a placebo effect. Although ” vision therapy ” is a field of optometry that treats problems with eye alignment, eye tracking and eye fatigue, there is no valid evidence that eye exercises can affect vision.

It is impossible to correct vision problems without the help of an ophthalmologist, and there are no simple and quick solutions to fix them. By adopting healthy eating habits, however, you can help keep your eyes healthy naturally. As always, we recommend that you consult your trusted eye doctor.

Nothing contained in this article can be construed as a form of medical advice, nor is it intended to replace the recommendations of an ophthalmologist. For specific questions, consult your trusted eye doctor.
